What to Expect When Getting a New HVAC System Installed

Professional AC installation on residential home

Replacing your HVAC system is one of the biggest home investments you'll make — typically $5,000 to $15,000. Here's a step-by-step guide to what to expect.

Step 1: The In-Home Consultation (Free)

A qualified technician will assess your current system, measure your home, evaluate ductwork, and perform a Manual J load calculation to determine exact heating and cooling capacity needed. An improperly sized system is one of the most common installation mistakes.

Step 2: Getting Your Estimate

You'll receive a written estimate including equipment brand/model, SEER2/AFUE ratings, complete scope of work, warranty details, and total cost. Tip: Get 2-3 estimates to compare — don't just look at price.

Step 3: Choosing Your System

  • Central AC + Furnace — Traditional combo, good with existing ductwork
  • Heat Pump — All-in-one heating and cooling, very efficient in NC
  • Dual-Fuel System — Heat pump + gas furnace backup, best of both worlds
  • Ductless Mini-Split — For homes without ductwork or specific zones

Step 4: Installation Day

Most residential installations take 1 day for a straight swap, or 2 days if ductwork modification is needed. Your technicians will:

  1. Protect your floors and walls with drop cloths
  2. Remove old equipment
  3. Install new indoor and outdoor units
  4. Connect refrigerant lines, electrical, and drainage
  5. Modify or seal ductwork as needed
  6. Install new thermostat if included
  7. Test the entire system
  8. Walk you through your new system's features
  9. Clean up the work area

Step 5: After Installation

  • Register your warranty — Most manufacturers require this within 60-90 days
  • Schedule maintenance — Annual service protects your investment
  • Monitor performance — Note any unusual noises or uneven temperatures in the first few weeks

How Long Does a New System Last?

With proper maintenance, expect 15-20 years from any system type. Annual maintenance is the key to reaching (and exceeding) those numbers.
